Central Oregon CISM

Welcome to Central Oregon CISM
Central Oregon Public Safety Chaplaincy provides CISM which is a method of helping first responders and others who have been involved with events that leave them emotionally and/or physically affected by those incidents. CISM is a process that enables peers to help their peers understand problems that might occur after an event. This process also helps people prepare to continue to perform their services or in some cases return to a normal lifestyle. We provide ICISF training for individuals and agencies who are interested in becoming a part of a crisis management team, or for an organization that is dedicated to helping individuals or groups recover from incidents.

Central Oregon CISM Team is dispatched to major events when requested by agencies and organizations that necessitates that the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team is responsible for mitigating severe stress and enhancing psychological resilience among emergency responders. Jurisdictions may also refer to this team as a Peer Support Team or First Responder Stress Support Team (FRSST). Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is the selection and implementation of the most appropriate crisis intervention tactics to best respond to the needs of the situation at hand. CISM has multiple components that can be used before, during, and after a crisis.

The Central Oregon CISM Team:
1. Assesses and prioritizes the behavioral health needs of first responders to an event
2. Provides peer-led, mental health-informed interventions to mitigate common stress responses and facilitate return to work. Interventions include:
a. Individual psychological first aid or crisis intervention
b. Education regarding normal stress responses and coping strategies for psychological resilience through informational groups such as Rest Information and Transition Services for first responders and Crisis Management Briefings for those with supportive functions and civilians
c. Group interventions to discuss responder experiences and elicit social support, including interactive group processes such as defusing and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD)
3. Provides referrals to community resources for follow-up or to address the need for higher levels of care
4. We meet quarterly as a team to train and improve our skills.

We provide peer support and training to agencies/organizations who are beginning or imporving their peer support teams.
Peer support personnel are certified first responders with specialized training through ICISF as peer support personnel and experience providing peer counseling and training. CISM teams do provide a “focused” peer support service when delivering a Critical Stress debriefing, defusing, or demobilization, they have historically not been trained to offer “general” peer support services; those support services offered outside of a singularly stressful event.

CCISM Certification is for:
Emergency responders
Mental health clinicians
Public health personnel
Disaster responders
Educators
Clergy
Employee assistance professionals
CERT team members and others who are interested in demonstrating knowledge in CISM.
Organizations who desire to promote and ensure a fundamental and standardized knowledge base among its personnel who respond to crisis and trauma.
